Subsoil Water

چکیده

In March, last, Drs. Cunningham and Lewis put ia motion experiments to test the value of Professor Pettenkofer's theory of the propagation of cholera, in the neighbourhood of Calcutta, by daily measurements of the level of subsoil water: they a^s0 caused similar experiments to be undertaken in Oudh. The measurements are now ordered by the Government of India to be carried out in every military cantonment, and most civil stations, throughout the Bengal Presidency. The end of next year should give us some very curious results, or, at all events, a good insight and knowledge of this subject, which doubtless will be very instructive as regards the drainage of the country and stations, though we doubt if it will add much to our knowledge as to the cause of cholera. The following memorandum has been prepared, showing what the Professor's theory really is, and the means that should be employed for testing it:? A.?Pettenkofer's theory? 1. The infecting matter of cholera is developed from a germ, which, as long as it remains a germ, is not capable of producing the disease.

Moderate Drought Stress Affected Root Growth and Grain Yield in Old, Modern and Newly Released Cultivars of Winter Wheat

To determine root growth and grain yield of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L) under moderate drought stress, a nursery experiment and a field trial were conducted with or without water stress using three representative cultivars released in different years: CW134 (old landrace), CH58 (modern cultivar) and CH1 (new release). In the nursery experiment, plants were grown in soil-filled rhizoboxes...

Rapid Water Flow and Transport of Inorganic and Organic Nitrogen in a Highly Aggregated Tropical Soil

SOILS in the humid tropics are known for their low retention capacity of nutrients and high susceptibility to leaching (Van Wambeke, 1992). Nitrogen is particularly susceptible to leaching losses since mineralization and nitrification both proceed very rapidly under humid tropical conditions and because nitrate is very mobile in most soils. In central Amazonian Oxisols, a large accumulation of ...

Topsoil and subsoil properties influence phosphorus leaching from four agricultural soils.

Eutrophication, a major problem in many fresh and brackish waters, is largely caused by nonpoint-source pollution by P from agricultural soils. This lysimeter study examined the influence of P content, physical properties, and sorption characteristics in topsoil and subsoil on P leaching measured during 21 mo in 1-m-long, undisturbed soil columns of two clay and two sandy soils. Total P losses ...

Reliability Estimation of Flow Characteristics Obtained in Laboratory Tests

Embankment dams, particularly tailings dams, are nowadays usually placed in swampy areas often dominated by organic soils, such as peats. Structures construction on soft organic soils makes it necessary to calculate subsoil deformations with a special consideration of the water flow. The test results show that the relationship between flow velocity and hydraulic gradient is always nonlinear. Th...

Soil Nitrate and Water Dynamics in Sesbania Fallows, Weed Fallows, and Maize

We hypothesized that the integration of trees into agricultural land-use systems can reduce NO., leaching and increase subsoil N utilization. A field study was conducted on a Kandiudalfic Eutrudox (Ochinga site) and a Kandic Paleustalf (Muange site) in the subhumid highlands of Kenya to measure changes in soil NO, and water to 200-cm depth for one rainy season in four land-use systems (LUS): (i...

Ground Water Nitrate Removal in Subsoil of Forested and Mowed Riparian Buffer Zones

We studied two similar riparian sites in southern New England and examined ground water nitrate (NO~--N) removal in the subsurface of mowed (i.e., herbaceous) v . forested (i.e., woody) vegetation. Each site consisted of poorly drained, fine to medium sands and contained adjacent areas of mowed and forested vegetation. We dosed mesocosms with bromide and lSN labeled NO~-N amended ground water t...
